Women in Fortnight: Niki B.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Niki and I am an artist and Tarot reader. I’ve been practicing and learning the Tarot for about 10 years and in the last 2 I’ve begun to read professionally. My art work has always had an element of the esoteric and been concerned with issues of spirituality and energy and as I have developed my Tarot practice I now recognize it all as the same thing! The same thread I’ve been following this whole time through different avenues 🙂

2. What do you like to wear closest to your skin?

I love soft cotton, lace and stretch fabrics. Things that either feel like they are holding you or just hanging from you.

3. What does feeling beautiful mean to you?

Beauty is such a wide and weird concept. I think true beauty is confidence, vulnerability and flaws. Its being interesting, kind and funny. It’s knowing your worth and not allowing anything to tell you you should be any way other than what you are. To me it really is finding confidence through the things that others would find to be flaws. Rolls, softness, hair, marks – ‘imperfections’. Honestly, it’s just so much more interesting and cool.

 4. What do you wear to feel most like yourself?

Most of my clothes are my dad’s old rejects. I have a Blue Jays world series sweater from 1992 that I stole from him years ago and wear literally ALL THE TIME. It is definitely my ‘go to’. But honestly what feels like myself changes from day to day. Sometimes it’s my striped mechanic overalls that are 2 times too big for me with an oversized t-shirt and boots, and sometimes it’s a fluttery floral mini dress with clogs. Being myself means being very open to the entire spectrum of my personality and just going with how I feel.

5. When do you feel most confident?

When I honour myself as a WHOLE. Confidence is not just a state of happiness. I can feel sorrow confidently if it is an emotion that I honour with the same respect as I would joy. All my states are a part of me, informing and feeding one another – shadows & light. All emotions are alive and require room to live and leave us with what is necessary, and in time, relieve us of what is excess. When I am able to recognize whatever way I feel, and HONOUR it, give it time and space, trusting that it has something to teach me, I feel confident. I feel self-respect and conviction. I was once taught to rethink the phrase “to feel proud of myself”, for pride is connected to Ego. Though Ego is one of my greatest teachers, I am experimenting with shifting this to feeling blessed or grateful instead. I feel blessed to be able to feel sad sometimes, to experience anger… so I can better know my joy. Recognizing and holding compassion for the WHOLE-istic makings of me, is confidence.

6. When do you feel most confident?

I feel most confident when I am relaxed and grounded and have had time to check in with myself. If I feel balanced and my energy is even, I am unflappable.

7. What makes a place feel like home?

Friends.  Having friends close by, even if you are in a city far away from where you grew up, or where your family is, will always make a place feel like home. And my cat Pony. She’s a bit of a handful, but she’s weird and funny and that’s my favourite combination… so having her meow at me constantly feels pretty home-y at this point, haha 🙂

8. Are there any self-care rituals that are important to you?

It’s really important for me to take time for myself. I work in very social environments and it can be EXTREMELY draining for me. I find that if I go a few weeks without making sure I have at least a few days to just BE, I start to get very anxious and depressed. Both my art and spiritual practices are very important parts of balancing my energy and grounding myself. Working in the studio, reading and working with the Tarot are incredibly rejuvenating and inspiring for me. It makes me feel, on a very deep level, connected and in line with myself.

9. How does Fortnight make you feel?

Fortnight makes me feel sexy as hell! These pieces are so beautifully built and feel so nice on my body. I honestly just love the way it feels to wear this stunning ivory longline set, or my black bodysuit under the most janky cut off shorts and oversized sweatshirts. I feel so sexy and confident because I feel so right in these. It can be hard to find undergarments made for bigger breasts and asses that are sexy and still do the job they are meant to. I love having a beautiful lingerie set on under regular street clothes because it’s only for me and my experience. It’s not for anyone else getting to see/experience these pieces on me – it’s me getting to at once feel sexy, comfortable, and badass as hell, haha <3
